Most of the sumptuous eateries lining the main road open sharply at 8am.
But for those with big hiking, travel or work plans for the day, there are a few select spots that open even earlier.
Less so on Sundays though… proof that Swellendam is still a trip down memory lane.
EARLY
Opening at a bracing 7.15am, the Healthbar offers a winning formula that’s the closest we have to cosmopolitan hipsterdom. A big Yes! to poached eggs and rocket on sourdough, with warm kombucha and great coffee. Saturdays 8.30am, Sundays closed.

EARLIER
Even earlier, at 7am, is Tredici, sited right on the N2 to cater to early travellers roaring by. Like an opulent Romanesque departure lounge, its breakfasts are sumptuous and its jewellery box of a shop is crammed with gold-embossed treats. Open a staggering 7 days a week, Tredici is joined on Saturday mornings by The Country Butcher, which offers earlybirds very good coffee, pastries and droewors in the most ancient museumy part of town.

EARLIEST
If you’re up before dawn, Nach Tisch is open from 6-10am, 6 days a week. Its early hours cater to flight students and other adventurers. Very simple fare based on the concept of a European working man’s diner.
